4 Fantastic Design Ideas For Facebook Pages

Sharing is caring!

Facebook Page management is one of the toughest social media tasks. Keeping up with all the changes in how to post and what type of posts to share can leave you fried for the basic tasks like creating great visual content. If you've found that you're struggling to create great visual content for your Facebook Page, I hope these five ideas can help jump start your creative process and get your ideas flowing.

To power up your Facebook design, use the proper size images for Facebook posts so you get great visibility in the newsfeed and on mobile devices. Currently, images that are 940 pixels by 788 pixels are centered and preview well on Facebook. If you have your Instagram photos feed in as square images or use other sizes, they look okay on the Facebook page but are different sizes in the newsfeed or on mobile. Embedded links pull through images and they look good on the Facebook page but are smaller on mobile devices.

1. Rotate your main real estate

Creating solid design on your Facebook Page keeps it fresh and interesting and your Facebook Cover Photo is the largest design element that you have so you'll want to use it wisely.

Team Martha Stewart keeps it seasonal and relevant with some delicious grilled corn on their cover. Simple, professional shot and you know you can find the recipe to make this too.

Here are some tips for creating winning Facebook cover images every time:

  1. Keep your page fresh by changing your cover at least once a month.
  2. Use this great social media real estate to share your latest marketing campaign.
  3. Create collages of user generated content to feature your Facebook fans.
  4. Click the cover photo after you load it & add a description with text & a relevant link. Martha's team could have hit a home run by adding information for this recipe in the photo description.
  5. Be creative but not overly promotional.

2. Use your cover photo to highlight your clickable call-to-action button

Guy Kawasaki Live

Guy Kawasaki loves to keep his Facebook Cover photo organic and have it tell a story. His story from this photo is “people think I'm funny, I'm connected with Richard Branson, and I'll get down on my knees shine Richard's shoes” which Richard Branson did for Guy years ago to get him to fly Virgin. On Guy's Page, we frequently use the Shop Now call to action button to link to buy Guy's books. You can see that thirty people clicked the Shop Now button this week from Guy's Facebook Page.

The key for design on this cover photo was cropping to make a clear spot for the call to action button to be visible.

Facebook provides 7 calls-to-action you can use on your call to action button. They include:

  1. Book Now
  2. Contact Us
  3. Use App
  4. Play Game
  5. Shop Now
  6. Sign Up
  7. Watch Video

There are many marketing possibilities for your Facebook call to action links. Plan out your social media marketing campaigns and rotate which button can make the biggest impact for you.

3. Keep your color palette simple

Social media design should be kept simple. Stick with your brand colors in a small color palette of two to three colors. Sticking to your brand consistently ties all your content together as well as making it easy to make choices in your designs.

My Book Club has a beautiful logo and I chose this color palette from a pin on Pinterest from Design Seeds.

Follow Peg Fitzpatrick ‘s board Design Seeds for color inspiration on Pinterest.

You can find inspiration your brand's style, colors, and mood, then work with a professional to create a unique and original logo for your brand. I used a secret Pinterest board for inspiration for my blog ideas and saved them for about a year until I was ready for my makeover. It was really helpful and the current blog design has all the elements that I wanted. I'm proud of my brand because I feel like it represents me, what I love, and who I am.

4. Add a watermark to your images

Amanda Rettke of I Am Baker describes your branding as secret marketing. It's not in-your-face marketing but a subtle wave to people who visit your Facebook community. You can add a little logo or your URL to the image.

Hopefully, some of your Facebook friends will be sharing your posts and your branding will travel with the image. See her branding in action here.

I hope this helps spark a few ideas for the Facebook Pages that you manage. Remember that with all design and creative pieces, please use these ideas to help launch your own creations. Don't copy another brand or style because you love it. Create your own brand based on your business, passions, and goals. Hire a pro if you need help. Go forth and be brandtastic!

  1. The watermark is one I’ve yet to perfect Peg. I love your circle logos. They look great, no matter what the image or social network. One of these days, I’ll figure mine out.

    1. Cool! I hope you gave it a try. It goes out as a post on your Facebook News Feed so it’s great to rotate and have fun with.
